World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty in Washington DC, 24-29th March 2019
 
The 20th Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty was held in Washington DC, USA the 25-29th of March, 2019. The topic's conference was: Catalyzing Innovation. Latest research, innovations and good practices in land policies and land governance around the world were presented. Three (3) members from NELGA North Africa node have attented the conference and participated by the following activities:
Prof. Abdelwahed El Idrissi (INAU) :
presented a paper on “Urban planning and land shortcoming in Morocco: Aspects of injustice and perspectives”, Tuesday March 26th, 2019
Prof. Loubna El Mansouri (IAV) :
presented a Poster on “Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data for Citrus crop management support and water monitoring”, Wednesday March 27th, 2019
Prof. Moha El-Ayachi (IAV) :
presented a paper on the “Indicators' assessment of Land Governance in Morocco: a preliminary study”, Thursday March 28th, 2019
Prof. El-Ayachi chaired a roundtable on “Scaling Up Land Programs - African Experiences and Global Solutions” in Wednesday 27 March 2019.

Within SLGA support, NELGA delegation was able to connect with land governance actors. A cooperation opportunities / framework are offered to NELGA partners to liaise with international Land stakeholders (ex. European-African consortium: African Mobility).

 
African Journal on Land Policy and Geospatial Sciences (AJLP&GS)

The AJLP&GS plays a crucial role in promoting knowledge sharing and dissemination. It allows publishing scientific research and high-quality manuscripts on topics related to land policy, land governance and geospatial sciences. .

 

According to its editorial strategy, the first issue of the year 2019 is published dealing with a special content related to Women and land in April 24th, 2019. This issue encompasses six (6) scientific papers in which four (4) are women contributions.

 

The second regular issue of the year is also published in 21st June 2019 with ten (10) manuscripts, seven (7) of them are published in English.

 
Nomination of IAV Hassan II as host institution of DAAD scholarship program

The IAV Hassan II Institute in Morocco has applied for DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship programme for the year 2019. The Institute was selected in April 2019. Within the framework of the SLGA programme, the DAAD provides research fellowships for women and men young candidates pursuing a Master’s degree or a PhD program in land use management, land governance and land related areas.

 

IAV Hassan II Institute is one of the six (6) other institutions classified as eligible host institutions of the DAAD programme. The scholarships provide students from African partner countries with financial support to help them pursuing their studies in land governance and related issues at the IAV Institute.

 
17th WASD Annual International Conference
 
 

The World Association for Sustainable Development held its annual conference in London from 17-21 June 2019. The conference has the aim to strengthening the role of science, innovation and research uptake in service of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development (SD).
The NELGA North Africa attended the conference and presented a paper on NELGA Research agenda and recent achievements. He presented the role of NELGA program in promoting research activities at the African level as a network of experts in land governance.

 
 
Reality-check on Land Governance in Northern Africa Countries
 
 

Within the framework of NELGA NA activities, a scoping study was planned to map on the state of the art of land governance in North Africa and to analyze the needs in training, CPD and research. The study covers the following countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, Egypt and Sudan. With Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (giz) GmbH support, the study is launched in Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Sudan and soon in Algeria.

The results of the scoping study will be used for the Competency Development Strategy as related to training, continuous training and research in the field of land governance. These results will allow the setting up of the Research Centre on Land Governance in the coming September 2019.

 
 
LAND-at-scale: a funding opportunity from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands
 
 

SLGA programme communicated an important cooperation opportunity to NELGA partners. The LAND-at-scale programme has been developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in close collaboration with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. This programme provides support to upscaling successful pilots, promising innovative interventions, and increased knowledge related to fair, inclusive and sustainable land governance.
LAND-at-scale aims at enhancing all types of legitimate land rights of men, women and youth and assist structural development in many thematic areas, such as food and nutrition security, economic development, conflict management, rule of law, integrated water resource management, city development, gender and climate change.
Supported interventions will preferably be located in the Sahel, Horn of Africa and Middle East & North Africa.

GLTN/UN-Habitat Call for Proposal : Arab Region Programme
 
 

The Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) and UN-Habitat are launching a call for proposals to invite interested non-profit organization from the Arab region to implement activities under the “Arab region programme on good land governance in support to inclusive development, peace and stability” funded by BMZ.
Activities will be implemented in the coming 12 to 24 months through collaborations that will entail the contribution of complementary resources (e.g. human resources, knowledge, in-cash and in-kind contributions, supplies and/or equipment, etc.) by implementing partners. Submissions in English or French will be accepted and should be received not later than Wednesday 17th July 2019.
